This lake is not a natural one, nor is it exactly an artificial one.

More than 100 years ago, when the British empire decided to build “Mullaperiyar” Dam  to irrigate the dry areas in southern region of the current state of Tamilnadu, The catchment area that got flooded is this particular lake of Periyar lake. The remnants of the vast forest land in the Western Ghats that submerged under the new lake has this ghostly remains of the trees that once stood tall there. The remainder of the forest is rich in biodiversity, having scores of mammals, birds, amphibians and a similarly rich flora.

The tourism industry also thrives and tries to impact it as minimally as possible.
