Constructed by an Italian architect, around 400 years back in 1636 by the erstwhile king of Madurai Thirumalai Nayak.
The pillars are about 13m in height, and there after the arches rise, giving the interior structure a total height of around 20m. Most of the construction is done using bricks and coated with shell lime and egg white. It is under the care of Tamil nadu Archaeological society.
Travel tips: Visitors are allowed, Go during autumn and winter. Summers can be too hot.
There are light and sound shows both in Tamil and English.
Do visit as an added site to the more famous Meenakshi amman Temple and Aayiram Kaal Mandapam (Hall of thousand Pillars)
